City of Lynwood Leads the Charge with Southern California Edison EV Program

Lynwood California City Hall with ChargePoint solutions

In May 2016, utility Southern California Edison (SCE) launched Charge Ready, a 2-year pilot program designed to decrease greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the state by increasing the availability of EV charging infrastructure to communities and businesses within its service areas. With 8 public ports and 6 more for its brand-new city EV fleet, Lynwood, California was the very first site under the program—and ChargePoint was Lynwood’s first choice for smart networked EV charging solutions. That’s a lot of firsts, but it’s a safe bet there will be many more on the horizon for Lynwood, SCE and ChargePoint.

Charge Ready couldn’t have come at a better time for Lynwood, a working-class community of 70,000 located just south of Los Angeles. Lynwood’s city council had been exploring ways to raise revenues while also reducing GHGs and becoming more energy efficient, says Sal Mendez, Lynwood’s acting public works manager. But for this small community, bringing EV charging to Lynwood simply wasn’t in the budget. “It was sort of a no-brainer once the Charge Ready program came into effect, he says. And ChargePoint? “At the end of the day, we wanted to reach as many people as possible,” says Mendez. “I wanted the vendor that had the biggest reach and ChargePoint was the one."
