Home Charging Basics

What is Level 2 charging and why do I need it at home?

Most EVs come with a “Level 1” charger that uses a standard 110-volt outlet to add about 4 to 5 miles of electric driving Range Per Hour of charging. While it’s convenient to plug in at home, Level 1 charging might not be fast enough to give you confidence that you’ll consistently have the charge you need. Faster “Level 2” chargers use 240 volts of electricity to deliver as many as 37 miles of Range Per Hour, or 9X faster than Level 1 charging. Having a faster charger at home gives you peace of mind that you can get where you need to go. Plus, charging at home can help you save money by charging at night when energy may be cheaper.

Which home charger should I pick?

ChargePoint Home Flex is our newest, fastest and most advanced home charger designed to work for all EV drivers. Adding up to 37 miles of Range Per Hour of charging, Flex can be installed at 16A to 50A, allowing drivers to pick the speed that's right for them and their home’s electrical supply. This lets you charge as fast as possible and helps avoid or minimize electrical upgrades. Flex comes with a 23-foot charging cable and supports hardwired installation or use of a NEMA 6-50 or 14-50 plug. ChargePoint Home Flex is WiFi-enabled for easy management with the ChargePoint app, UL listed for electrical safety, ENERGY STAR certified for efficiency, and backed by a 3-year warranty and 24/7 support. Connecting to ChargePoint

Why should I get a WiFi connected charger?

Connecting your ChargePoint Home to WiFi lets you use the ChargePoint app to:

  • Schedule charging* when electricity is cheapest, set reminders and start charging remotely
  • Find the best time to charge based on local utility rates
  • See how many miles have been added based on your car model
  • Track all your home and public charging info in one place
  • Find and access public charging stations
  • Start a charge with your voice using Amazon Alexa.

You need a ChargePoint account to use the app with your home charger.

*Don’t worry: if your WiFi is ever disconnected, ChargePoint will still charge your car on the schedule you’ve set.

Do I need a credit card to use ChargePoint Home? Are there any recurring fees?

Nope! You can create a ChargePoint account to activate your ChargePoint Home without a credit card. When you install a station at a single-family home, you pay for the energy used through your electric utility. Adding a payment method to your ChargePoint account lets you charge away from home at stations with a fee, if you need to.

Can I associate two ChargePoint accounts with one home station?

We currently support one ChargePoint account per home charger. Many ChargePoint Home customers use their station to charge their family’s two EVs.

Compatibility and Specifications

Will ChargePoint home chargers work with my EV?

All ChargePoint home chargers have a standard SAE J1772™ connector that works with all EVs on the road. If you drive a Tesla, just use the J1772 adapter that comes with your car.

Can I charge outdoors?

ChargePoint Home models have been tested in various weather conditions (rated NEMA 3R) and can be installed outdoors by hardwiring the station or plugging into a weatherproof NEMA receptacle.

How big are the stations?

ChargePoint Home Flex is 7” wide, 11” high, 5.2” deep and 7” deep when the charging connector is docked. The combined station and cable weight is 13.8 pounds.

What are the available charging cable lengths?

ChargePoint Home Flex comes with a 23-foot charging cable.

Which plug type (NEMA 6-50 or 14-50) should I get for plug-in installation?

Either option will work, and your electrician can help determine what's best or which receptacle is already installed in your home. We like NEMA 6-50 because it does not require an additional neutral wire, which may slightly reduce installation cost compared to NEMA 14-50. Outside of EV charging, NEMA 6-50 outlets are commonly used with welders and NEMA 14-50 outlets are commonly used with electric ovens or recreational vehicles.

Another great option to consider if you don’t already have a 240v outlet available is to hardwire your charger. The Hardwire option can accommodate circuit breaker ratings from 20 to 80 A and deliver up to 50 A of power for fastest charging. The Charge Point Home Flex offers three different installation options to fit your needs: a Hardwire option, NEMA 6-50 and NEMA 14-50. The Hardwire option is recommended if you do not already have a 240 V outlet available, if you plan to install outdoors, or if your local regulations require a GFCI breaker.

How can I prepare for installation before I buy?

Talk to your electrician about where you want to install your charger, which circuit rating/amperage setting is right for you (see below), and whether you want to use a plug-in or hardwired installation. Feel free to send them the Flex Tips for Electricians to prepare. To find a trusted electrician near you, use Qmerit Installation Services for ChargePoint Home. Download the ChargePoint app to get ready to activate your station once it’s installed.

ChargePoint Home Flex can be set to charge at 16 amps, 24A, 32A, 40A, 48A or 50A. The higher the amperage, the faster the charging speed, depending on the amperage rating of your car's onboard charger. The 32A and 40A settings are the most popular and work well for most drivers. 48A and 50A offer the fastest charging speeds but may require electrical panel upgrades. If your electrician indicates that your panel has limited capacity, select the highest amperage your panel has room for. Note that plug-in installation can only be used for circuits rated 40A or 50A. Click here for additional installation FAQs.

Amperage Setting Estimated Range Per Hour Maximum Output Power Circuit Breaker Rating Plug-in Installation Hardwired Installation
16A 12 mi / 19 km 3.8 kW 20A No Yes
24A 18 mi / 29 km 5.8 kW 30A No Yes
32A 25 mi / 40 km 7.7 kW 40A Yes Yes
40A 30 mi / 48 km 9.6 kW 50A Yes Yes
48A 36 mi / 58 km 11.5 kW 60A No Yes
50A 37 mi / 60 km 12 kW 70A/80A No Yes

What is the maximum output power?

ChargePoint Home Flex has a maximum output power of 12 kW (240V, 50A) and can be set to a different power level during installation using the ChargePoint app, as low as to 3.8 kW (240V, 16A).

What is the product warranty?

ChargePoint Home stations are backed by a 3-year parts warranty. If you ever have an issue with your charger, call us 24/7 at 1-888-758-4389.

Can I use ChargePoint at my apartment or condo?

ChargePoint Home stations are designed for single-family home use only. If your parking space at your condo is powered by your own electricity and not common area electricity, then ChargePoint Home may work. Otherwise, tell your property manager or HOA about ChargePoint's multi-family solutions.

Can I buy a ChargePoint home charger for my business?

ChargePoint Home stations are for residential use only. If installed at a location other than a single-family home or condo with personal electricity supply, the station's warranty will be voided.

What is the difference between the NEMA 6-50, the NEMA 14-50, and the Hardwire product?

The ChargePoint Home Flex offers several different configurations to meet your needs. Your electrician can help you determine which one is best for you.  The Hardwired product can accommodate circuit breaker ratings from 20 A to 80 A and deliver up to 50 A of charging, enabling the fastest charge.  It does not have an input power plug and is designed to be installed directly. It is also the recommended option for outdoor installation.

The Home Flex also offers 2 options that can be plugged into a 240 V outlet. Because there is not one standard plug configuration for a 240 V outlet, we offer two options that feature the most common types of plugs, the NEMA 6-50 and the NEMA 14-50. The plug-in option may be better if you will need to move your charger in the future. If you do not already have a 240 V outlet available, then the Hardwire option may be the best choice. Make sure to check your local electrical codes. If local regulations require a GFCI breaker, then you will need to hardwire your Home Flex.

When my Home Flex arrived, it didn’t have a plug. Why? What should I do?

We offer a variety of installation options and plug types to fit your needs. One of those options is a Hardwire product that is designed to be installed directly into your home’s electrical system instead of being plugged into a wall socket. If your product does not have a plug, then it was designed for a hardwire installation, and does not need a plug. The Hardwire product is a good option because it is compatible with the max amperage setting of 50A for fastest charging. It is also the recommended option for outdoor installation and required if your local electrical codes mandate a GFCI breaker.

If you already have a 240 V outlet available for your Home Flex, and had planned to plug it in, then you will need to return the Hardwire version and purchase the product with the plug type that matches your available 240 V outlet [either NEMA 6-50 or NEMA 14-50]. Consider checking with your electrician to see which Home Flex option is best for you.
